Play your way into Yoga

by Jaime Theimer

Yoga can benefit children in more ways than you may know. Consider these important few:

  • Instills confidence with new challenges and experiences
  • Increases self awareness
  • Builds emotional strength
  • Builds coordination and balance
  • Promotes self discipline
  • Encourages teamwork
  • Teaches respect, compassion, and sharing
  • Life lessons
  • Sense of calmness and relaxation improves
  • Builds the foundation for a healthy and happy life

Integrating yoga into your everyday activities is a great way to embrace these benefits. For example, on a bad weather day, you could do the following:

Flying Superman”: Lie on your back, knees bent. Have your child stand at your feet, facing away from you. Place your feet at the middle of his back, supporting his body. Have him reach to hold your hands. Raise your legs until his feet are off the floor and he’s facing the ceiling. (NYC yoga instructor Candace Morano)

Beach Day” (or any adventure): Take a trip to the beach; ask your child open ended questions to get their imaginations going, “how are we going to get there-bike, car, boat, etc?; then come up with a pose together that resembles one; pretend to put lotion on so you don’t get burned, go surfing, look at sea life; then relax with a nap on the beach – have a CD playing “ocean” sounds or just close your eyes and pretend to hear the waves crashing, warm sun on your face, toes in the sand…

Bones and muscles may be the same, but yoga shapes them into strong minds.
